Why I Became a Photographer – Capturing Moments That Matter in Montreal

From the moment I held my first camera at the age of 7—a simple 35mm Samsung point-and-shoot—I was hooked. There was something magical about freezing a moment in time, whether it was my family at a gathering or the places I’d visit. Looking back now, it’s clear that this early passion planted the seed for my journey as a professional Montreal photographer.

Finding My Focus: From Darkroom to DSLR

In high school, I discovered black and white photography and completely fell in love with the art of developing film in the darkroom. It was hands-on, creative, and deeply rewarding. I spent hours capturing candid shots of friends, family, and city life. It wasn’t about perfection—it was about storytelling.

Fast forward to age 30: I received my first DSLR, and that hobby quickly turned into a deeper passion. I began experimenting with new styles, lighting setups, and techniques—slowly building the foundation for what would become my career.

A Turning Point: From Creative Direction to Camera Lens

In 2017, I had the opportunity to work as a creative manager on a fashion photoshoot. Seeing the energy on set—the stylists, models, photographers, and assistants all working together to bring a vision to life—lit a spark in me. Over the next two years, I produced photoshoots and began to see the camera not just as a tool, but as a way to connect, collaborate, and create.

That experience led me to leave my 9-to-5 job and apply to Dawson College’s Commercial Photography program in early 2020. I wanted to turn my passion into a business—something that allowed me to blend content creation with visual storytelling.

From Graduation to Full-Time Photographer

Balancing full-time work as a marketing director and my photography studies wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. In 2022, I proudly graduated from Dawson, and my skills as a photographer had grown exponentially.

Photography became part of both my career and my side projects. I began taking on everything from event photography and family photography in Montreal, to content shoots for small businesses and nonprofit events.

One of the most fulfilling experiences came in February 2023 when I partnered with Passion for Paws to run a photo booth at their Cupid’s Market. That event opened the door to doing dog photography professionally, capturing the spirit and personality of dogs who had been surrendered to the program. It was emotional, meaningful, and beautiful—and I knew I had found one of my creative callings.

Why I Do What I Do

For me, photography is about more than just snapping a pretty picture. It’s about capturing the essence of the subject—their energy, emotions, and story—in a single frame. Whether I’m photographing a graduate stepping into their future, a couple at prom, or a dog waiting for their forever home, I see each image as a snapshot of time worth preserving.
